- The Union obtained control over most of the Mississippi but one key location remained; Vicksburg. They utilized their gunboats to shell the city while an army assaulted it on land. Vicksburg surrendered after six weeks due to the fact that its supplies and food was running low. Step 2 of the Anaconda plan was completed; the Confederacy was now divided in two.

- The Massachusetts 54th Regiment was an African regiment that attacked Fort Wagner courageously. They lost half of their men and retreated, but they showed great bravery and became widely respected. Although Blacks received less pay and poor equipment, they fought bravely in pursuit of liberty to save the Union.

- Lincoln was reelected as president because of Sheridan's timely destruction of the Shenadoah Valley and Sherman's capture of Atlanta. These victories convinced Northerners to elect Lincoln once again. About a year after his election, Robert Lee (the Confederate general) finally surrendered in the village of Appomattox Court House.
