  • Give me your backpack! I need to search it!
  • No, you're not allowed to look through my backpack.
  • It doesn't matter, I'm going to look through it anyway!
  • AVA NIKE
  • In this scene, the teacher demands to go through the student's backpack without permission. The 4th Amendment states that no one can search your body, or your house, or your papers and things, unless they can prove to a judge that they have a good reason for the search. Without the Bill of Rights, the teacher would be allowed to search the girl's backpack, even without her permission.

  • 5th Amendment
  • Tell everyone that you're guilty! Admit it!
  • I don't have to say anything.
  • Yes you do, you're on trial!
  • In this scene, the judge is trying to force the defendant to say that he is guilty. The 5th Amendment protects the right to not incriminate yourself. It states that you cannot be forced to admit that you are guilty of a crime, and if you choose not to, you don't have to say anything at your trial at all. Without the Bill of Rights, he wouldn't have the choice of keeping his silence.

  • 8th Amendment
  • The bail fine is $50,000. Either pay up or you're staying here.
  • $50,000? That's not fair! All I did was shoplift a pack of gum from the gas station!
  • In this scene, the police officer demands the prisoner pay $50,000 for bail. The fine does not match the crime, which was stealing a pack of gum. The 8th Amendment protects this prisoner's rights by stating that the government can't make you pay more than is reasonable in bail or fines. Without the Bill of Rights, he would have to pay the bail or stay in jail.
