An atom is a particle of matter that uniquely defines a chemical element. An atom consists of a central nucleus that is usually surrounded by one or more electrons. Each electron is negatively charged. The nucleus is positively charged, and contains one or more relatively heavy particles known as protons    and    neutrons.
But Teacher, who discovered atoms? 
Democritus was a Greek philosopher who was the first person to use the term atom (Atomos: meaning indivisible).He thought that if you take a piece of matter and divide it and continue to divide it you will eventually come to a point where you could not divide it any more.
Who discovered  electrons, protons and nucleus?
Electron was discovered by J. J. Thomson  in 1897 Rutherford had discovered the atomic nucleus in 1911, and had observed the proton in 1919.
What is the significance of atoms in our world.?
In the most simple terms, without atoms there would not be a functioning world. Atoms make up matter, and matter makes up everything in the world,
