  • I see, but when the Northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun and it is summer, the Southern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun and it is winter. This means seasons are reversed in the different hemispheres!
  • This is a model of the Earth revolving around the Sun. The red line is Earth's axis of rotation and the green line is the equator. Notice how the Earth's axis always tilts in the same direction. When Earth is tilted such that one hemisphere is closer to the Sun, it is summer in that hemisphere because sunlight hits the ground closer to perpendicular, heating it up more. The opposite is also true so when a hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, it is winter there because sunlight hits the ground at more of an angle.

  • It is autumn or spring when Earth's axis does not point directly away or towards the sun. We can figure out whether it is spring or autumn by stepping back one season (revolving the Earth 90 degrees clockwise) and then using the following progression of seasons: winter-spring-summer-autumn to figure out what season it would be. For example, it you step one season back and it is summer, then the season is autumn.
  • But how do you figure out autumn and spring?
