- 1. I SEE LAND UP AHEAD!
- On April 26, 1587, Governor John White and 117 colonists set sail from Portsmouth England, to the New World. Two years earlier, an unsuccessful attempt had been made to establish a settlement on Roanoke Island. Sir Richard Grenville left his crew on the Island and went back to England for supplies. The colonist's got tired of waiting for the group to come back so they headed towards the Island. White and the company Arrived on July 22, 1587
- 2. Didn't I tell you we'd make it, boys! Let's move out!!
- 3. WOOOO!! YEAHH!! WE MADE IT!!!!
- 1. What happened to our men...?!
- When they arrived, they found the Island deserted and the fort Demolished. They eventually had to leave but White wanted to return and find out what really happened.
- Whats going on..??
- 2. What?! But how?? they cant just disappear out of thin air like that!!
- 3. Why would they just leave without a trace??

- *THREE YEARS LATER*White finally was able to return and when he arrived he found the word Croatoan carved on a piece on fence. He also found on a tree the word Cro. Other than this we have no evidence as to what happened to the Lost colonists. And after so many years of not knowing what happened we have figured out the answer!

- 2. What are these writings?? What do they mean??

- *5 YEARS AGO*2 years before John came to Roanoke Island, someone else came before him and his name was Ralph Lane.
- 2. Yes. I have full confidence that with you as our captain we can take it!
- 1. Yes! This land is perfect!! This will please the Queen. I am certain that we can take over this land easily.
- Ralph went and met with the natives living in that area.
- 1. Hello! we would like to stay here for a while and learn more about your land.
- 2. You are Welcome to stay as long as you'd like!
- 2. But this is our home.. we have no where else to go.. why would you do this??

- Lane was nice at first towards the natives but then gradually became mean towards them
