- Arnold finds out Penelope's problems
- Arnold and Penelope go to the winter formal
- Everyone finds out Arnold is poor
- When Arnold goes to the bathroom during class, he hears someone throwing up in the next room. He waits outside to make sure they are alright and it turns out to be Penelope. After some talk Arnold discovers that Penelope is bulimic and Arnold reassures her and they start dating.
- Arnold goes to basketball tryouts
- Arnold takes Penelope out to the winter formal. Since he doesn't have money to buy a new suit, he has to wear his dad's old suit from the '70s. He feels very self conscious about the suit but Penelope loves it which makes him feel a lot better about himself. The two had a great night.
- First high school basketball game
- After the dance, a group of popular people, including Arnold and Penelope, go out to eat at a restaurant. Arnold is poor but he doesn't want the others to think worse of him so he pretends like he forgot his wallet. Out in the parking lot Penelope questions him about it and he revels that he is poor and has to regularly walk to 22km home. Penelope breaks down into tears because she feels bad for him.
- Arnold's hospital visit
- Arnold tries out for the junior varsity basketball team for his new school. The coach wants to test him so he puts Arnold against their star player. Arnold plays really well against him and impresses the coach to make the team.
- In the first basketball game of the year, Arnolds new school plays against his home town reservation school. The people in his hometown think of Arnold as a traitor for leaving to go to a white school. The other team hits Arnold intentionally and knocks him unconscious. After the hit, both teams start fighting each other and completely stop the game.
- Arnold is sent to the hospital after getting knocked out. The coach goes to the hospital and while Arnold is being monitored he is not allowed to sleep, so the coach and Arnold stay up all night and tell stories to each other.
