Neil was born on August 5th, 1930, in a farmhouse in Wapakoneta, Ohio. His dad worked for the Ohio state government, and his mom worked at home. As a teen, Neil would work in doughnut shops to earn extra money, so he can pay for flying lessons. In school, Neil played in the musical Mississipi Moonshiners.
Neil Armstrong spent 2 years at Purdue University, and 3 years in the Navy. While training, Neil first began with 20-min flights called hops. He was stationed in Pensacola, Flordia. When the Korean war broke out, he belonged to Fighter Squadron 51. His mission was to bomb enemy bridges and railroads, or scout terrain. After he returned home, he was assigned to become an astronaut.

After the astronauts returned back to Earth, they were kept in isolation to check if they brought any germs back. After, Neil, Buzz, and Michael were sent all around the world called the Giant Leap Tour.
