So you want to know what a case study is, huh? Well, I can help! A case study is a way that researchers can learn more about a person, group, or any unit that can be specifically defined, or "bounded." I will tell you more about what "bounded" means soon!
Sometimes people get confused about what a case study actually is. A common misconception about case study research is that a case study must focus on only one individual or one location. However, if these people or groups can be "bounded" together, it can be a case study!
Within case study research, the research questions are incredibly important! Researchers must ensure that the research questions that they develop involve seeking to understand a concept. These questions often begin with "How" or "Why." Without sound research questions, you do not have anything to guide you!
Well, let us now talk about that term "bounded" that I keep mentioning! Bounded systems are an essential component of case study research. When I say that something is "bounded" I mean that the case that is being examined has definitive parameters of time, place, or even physical boundaries!
I think a lot about who I am in relation to case study research. Specifically, I consider my own epistemological and ontological perspectives so that I can be the best researcher possible. My understanding of knowledge, how I acquire such knowledge, and my conceptions of reality are important because they can influence the way I approach and conduct research.
Additionally, in my research, it is important for me to consider my subjectivities, positionalities, and features unique to me because I am a factor in the research I conduct. I want to be keenly aware of who I am in these areas before, during, and after research so that I may have the greatest opportunity to produce quality research.
