  • In Marigolds, Lizabeth lives in a shantytown during the Great Depression, and the narrator explains that it is a town made of mostly dirt, except for a woman named Mrs. Lottie's marigold flowers.
  • Climax
  • The first action is when the she hears her mother and father arguing in the middle of the night about money, which upsets her and makes her realize the dire situation her family is in.
  • Falling Action
  • The next rising action is when she crosses the threshold when she runs to Ms. Lottie's home, not knowing why she wants to tear up the marigolds. When she is tearing up the flowers, she accepts that what she has done cannot be undone.
  • Resolution
  • The ordeal is when the narrator is tearing up the marigolds and Ms. Lottie comes out and stands over her, not showing any rage, for there was nothing to protect anymore.
  • Lizabeth!
  • M-Ms. Lottie!
  • The falling action is that she now realizes what the marigolds had represented to Ms. Lottie, the love and beauty and joy that had not been squeezed out by life was there.
  • The resolution is when she realizes she is no longer a child and is a woman now. She accepts that she must deal with the hardships of her life because she no longer has the blissful ignorance all adults long for.
