(1) Now, there weren't just fights out in the open. The U.S. and the USSR fought in secret, using spies, sabotage, and covert operations to influence other countries. The CIA was created in 1947 and was America's secret weapon. They would overthrow communist-friendly leaders, prop up U.S. friendly governments, and gather info on the Soviets.
(2) Wow that's kind of cool!
(4) Wait, so the U.S. got rid of another countries leader just because of oil?
(5) Welcome to Cold War politics. The CIA wasn't just fighting wars, it was playing global chess with the Soviets.

(1) In 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee, or HUAC for short, was a congressional committee that investigated suspected communist influence in America. And they REALLY had it out for Hollywood. Because movies shape public opinion, HUAC believed communist ideas were being secretly spread through films, so, they started grilling film industry workers and there was a specific few that refused to answer questions. They are known as the "Hollywood Ten".
(2) So, they were communists?
(4) In 1947, Truman launched the Loyalty Program to check if government workers had communist ties. Over 3 million federal employees were investigated. They didn't really find anything, but people got fired for having connections like reading the wrong books or going to the wrong meetings. If someone thought you were a communist, you could lose your job... or worse.

(2) Isreal was attacked on the day it was created? That's crazy. How come when you teach this stuff it's so much more interesting than Mr. B?
(1) Jewish survivors of the Holocaust wanted their own homeland, but Arabs living there didn't want to give up their land. The United Nations voted to split up Palestine into two states, one for Jews and one for Arabs. The Jews accepted, but the Arabs? Not so much. On May 14th 1948, Isreal declared itself a country. Within hours, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq invaded.
(3) No idea, I'm just cool like that cause I'm Rebecca Black. Anyways, against all odds, Isreal won and expanded its borders beyond what was planned.

(3) Not necessarily. Some were, some weren't. But they refused to cooperate so they were blacklisted, meaning no Hollywood studio would hire them again, and it didn't stop there.
(3) It'd definitely one of the cooler moments, but it was still so dangerous. Take Iran for example. The CIA didn't like that their Prime Minister Mossadegh wanted to nationalize their oil, so they overthrew hum and put the Shah back in power.
