  • Tobacco farmers in Virginia were the first to enslave African americans. Farmers in the north and south colonies also attracted getting slave to help with the crops.

  • Enslaved people had very little hope of better life. This is beacause they were consider property acording to colnial laws. They could not mary, recive an education or seek freedom.

  • African Americans devloped new cultural decisions like dancing, music, and story telling across west africas cultral regions. This is one way they would cope.
  • Puritan Church
  • Religon was very important to enslaved people, but it was hard for them to maintane their faith and traditions. The laws prohibited any other religon that wasn't christantiy.
  • The great awaking was when preachers went around towns and preached sermons to huge crowds. They were trying to spread God's word and say that everyone is spritualy equal in God's eyes.
  • In New England puritain commuties, the goverment was very strict about going to church on sunday. Sometimes they would even have someone come to their house to make sure that they were at church. This is why part of why people in America wanted to seperate relgion from goverment.
