  • At the time, prohibition, thanks to the 18th amendment, prohibited the manufacturing and sale of alcoholic beverages. However, this did not stop people from attaining access to alcohol. Speakeasies became places where bootleg liquor was sold. Those who sold and attained this were called bootleggers. Flapper became a movement set by young people apart from the older generation. Using modern tactics, the KKK gained popularity as they resurged against foreigners, communists, Catholics, Black people, and Jews. The great migration caused The Harlem Renaissance became known as a period in which talented black actors, artists, writers, and musicians gained popularity
  • The three Rs, relief, reform, and recovery. 
  • On October 24th, 1929, stock prices plunged after an unprecedented amount was selling. By October 29th, millions of investors ordered brokers to sell. In the weeks following, prices on Wall Street continued to fall. While some say this was the ultimate cause of the Great Depression, uneven distribution of wealth, stock market speculation, excessive use of credit, overproduction of goods, weak farm economy, high tariffs, and global economic problems caused the crisis.
  • Despite the many people who suffered from the Great Depression, President Hoover believed the nation could defeat the difficult times if they listened to his advice to exercise voluntary action and restraint. After the Bonus March, where Veterans gathered to demand bonus pay and Hoover forced them about with teargas and tanks, many Americans saw Hoover as uncaring. 
  • Franklin D Roosevelt "FDR" came about in the election of 1932 as the democratic nominee. He pledged the New Deal, repeal of Prohibition, unemployment aid, and government spending cuts. Bank Holiday happened in 1933 as banks were failing and were granted to close on March 6th through the radio by the president. The government reorganized them to be on a sound basis through the Emergency Banking Act. Banks reopened on March 13th. New Deal was a vague promise with no real plans to slow and end the depression. They were to cover relief, reform, and recovery.
