"You have faulty understanding of young girls. There is a promise in any bed" ( miller 47)
Irony
" aye "
"Do you know your commandments Mr. Proctor?" ( miller 64)
Suspense
"Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang!" (Miller 129)
analysis : In this example, it highlights a theme that we see throughout the play. The theme of consequences. Elizabeth tells Proctor that because he had slept with her, he made her think they were in love. His consequence for doing this was that Abigail went and accused him and his wife of witchcraft because she felt jealous.
Character Analysis
"Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby" (Miller, line 198)
analysis: In this scene the irony being used is verbal irony. This is where the Reverend John Hale asked John Procter to state the commandments. This is ironic due to the fact that John Procter committed adultery and when he stated the commandments he forgot to state adultery.
Connection to McCarthyism and the red scare
"I am not a witch !"
analysis:Suspense is used throughout the Crucible in attempts of making it more appealing to the reader. In this case, John Proctor, falsely confesses to witchcraft and foreshadows his own hanging. Miller uses suspense in a way that makes the reader feel real feelings for the characters.
Symbolism
analysis: In this example, John Proctor admits to touching Abby which sets the forefront for the rest of the play. His affair is what creates the plot and in the end it is what leads to his own demise.
analysis: Miller did an amazing job relating the events that occurred in Salem to the events that we saw in the 1950's during the red scare. Miller described how the lack of true evidence and the substantial amount of fear is what ruined the lives of the victims.
" I saw him in the woods!"
analysis:Poppets, once seen as a symbol of innocence and youth, are transformed into a a symbol of terror. The use of poppets is used in The Crucible to convict individuals. Poppets were used to hurt others through things like voodoo. During the prosecution, they questioned Abigail, asking her for her verbal confession to seeing Mary Warren stick a needle in the poppet, worried that Mary was practicing voodoo.
"A poppet were discovered in Mr. Proctor's house, stabbed by a needle. Mary Warren claims that you sat beside her in the court when she made it, and that you saw her make it and witnessed how she herself stuck her needle into it for safe-keeping" (Miller 102)."
