Jean Baptiste Pompallier was Born to Francoise Pompallier and her Husband Pierre Pompallier who were merchant class civvilians, sadly dies 8 and 1/2 months after Jean was Born
It was said that before he became a priest Jean Pompallier became a Officer In the Dragoons (Military unit) and then also worked in Silk trade before he joined the seminary of Lyons in 1825 at the age of 26 and was ordained in 1929 at the age of 30.
He served as priest for 7 years until on 30 June 1936 he was made Bishop and head of Western Oceania and just a few months later with the help of 3 brother and 4 Priests he set sail. He dropped a few Priests on multiple islands. Unfortunately 1 died at sea from sea sickness.

Pompallier came to New Zealand on 10 January 1838 in Hokianga and with the help of Some Irish Catholics and Maori Converts Pompallier picked up Englishand Maori fast since they knew neither. So far they were off to a good start and more and more were converting everyday.
