Motif: Deception

Testo Storyboard

  • Act 2 Scene 1
  • If love be blind, love cannot hit the mark. Now will he sit under a medlar tree and wish his mistress were that kind of fruit (II.I.36)
  • Mercutio and BenvolioThe Streets of Verona
  • Romeo, good night. I'll to my truckle bed; this field-bed is too cold for me to sleep. Come, shall we go? (II.I.44)
  • To seek him here that means not to be found (II.I.46)
  • Mercutio and Benvolio are searching for Romeo, under the impression that he is hiding because of Rosaline, but Romeo loves Juliet instead. (Deception)
  • He jests at scars that never felt a wound (II.II.1)
  • The motif, deception, is evident here, shown by the dialogue of Mercutio. Mercutio, while searching for Romeo, makes fun of Romeo and his love for Rosaline. Little does he know, Romeo is no longer in love with Rosaline. This plays upon the idea that lies will always come back to bite you.
  • After searching for a while, the two men are tired and want to go home, thinking that they are not in the right place to find Romeo. However, Romeo has deceived them again. Romeo was at the scene, but did not reveal himself to his friends.
  • Through Romeo's actions, Shakespeare tells us that sometimes it is easier to lie than tell the truth.
