Harper's brother, Tin, gets trapped underneath mud and trees during a flood. He is spared from death by digging himself out. This experience is how he discovered his love for digging and the talent he possessed.

They didn't stay to see Tin fold into the grass, shivering with exhaustion... [I didn't] understand why he should need comforting-- he had hardly known Caffy" (155).
Harper's baby brother, Caffy, falls into a hole. Despite being semi-estranged and now avoidant of his family, Tin digs down to Caffy in an attempt to rescue him. When Tin comes back to the surface holding Caffy dead in his arms, he is deeply saddened and ashamed.

Harper now lives with her sister in a house by the sea, far from her parents and life back in the countryside. The house was purchased by a piece of gold that Tin had dug up and given to his family. That was the last time they saw him. Tin's last act toward his family was to save them from the financial hardship they had to this point endured.
