Gandhi was born in Porbandar, in India in 1869. He was called Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and was raised by Hindu parents. He remained a Hindu throughout his life, but had many Christian and Muslim friends as a child.
Independence
Gandhi hated when anyone in the ashram broke the peaceful environment and would fast when anyone was upset by another member of the ashram.
The "Great Souled One"
His most famous protest came in 1930 with the salt marches. This was a protest against the tax on salt, which was a distance of 240 miles over 24 days. Over 60,000 Indians were arrested for it.
Death of a legend
India achieved Independence in 1947, but with it came partition - the splitting of India into Pakistan (East and West) which would be mostly Muslim, And India, which would be mostly Hiindu. This caused large amounts of fighting and death. During this, Gandhi threatened to fast until death. This made some fighting come to an end.
Mahatma Gandhi had come to be known as "Father of India" after he used peaceful forms of protest to help gain India's independence from British rule. He consistently promoted non-violence, justice and harmony between people of all faiths. Most people called him "Mahatma" Gandhi as it was a term of honour and means "Great Souled One".
Sadly, in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was shot and killed by a racial Hindu fanatic who was annoyed that he was negotiating with Jinnah and the Muslims. Roughly one million people followed the process of Gandhi's body through the streets for his funeral.
