  • When Stella's daughter Kennedy asked her mom about her family, she asks, "What was it like when you were growing up? Did you have brothers and sisters? What did your house look like? Once, during bedtime, she asked Stella what her mother was like and Stella nearly dropped the storybook" (Bennett 171). Kennedy's questions make Stella feel uneasy and drawn in more to her past life. She doesn't want to remember or wants to discuss her family.
  • They're gone.

  • When Stella went to the museum as a white woman, Bennett writes, "Being white wasn't the most exciting part. Being anyone else was the thrill" (Bennett 205). Stella enjoys the thrill of being someone else. Stella didn't find just being white as the exciting part.

  • When Stella was discussing her love with Blake, she says, "When you married someone, you promise to love every person he would be" (Bennett 286). Marriage is not just about loving the person as they are in the moment, but also about embracing changes and growth over time. Marriage means not just committing to love, but loving the person as life changes.
