Lucas and his mother live in a heatless apartment in Washington. Lucas is a basketball player. He has an awkward, lanky build and gets made fun of by his teammates and kids at school.
Climax
Lucas meets a girl, Trina and asks his brother, Mark, for money. Lucas admits he doesn't know where Mark gets it from, but takes it. Mark tells Lucas that he can make good money "the street way". Lucas begins working at a buffet, so he can afford nice clothes to impress Trina. 
Falling Action
Lucas and his coach talk about how Mark hasn't played basket since he broke his ankle and has since been caught up in the street life. Lucas's mother also expresses her disapproval of Mark and his failure in education. 
Resolution
Mom Room
Lucas's mother's health is declining as she struggles to get in and out of bed. She takes more days off work and Lucas helps around the house more. The struggle of money becomes a greater issue. Trina and Lucas wanted to go to a school dance, but Lucas never asked her, because he didn't have the money for it. 
Lucas wins an MVP trophy at a school game and only gets praise from Trina. At his grandmother's house, she makes him take the trophy off the dinner table. Lucas believes that playing basketball will help him lead a good life.
Lucas wins the last game of the season and makes it on the front cover of the newspaper. However, his grades are lowering and he continues to argue with kids in school. In a conversation with his mother he learns his brother, Mark, sold drugs since high school and once broke his ankle running from the cops, which caused Mark to never play sports and live the street life. Lucas is determined to go down the right path and not end up like his brother.
