  • Excommunications: In 1054, tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church led to a dramatic split. Cardinal Humbert, representing the Pope, kicked out Patriarch Michael I Cerularius of the Eastern Church. In response, Michael I Cerularius expelled Humbert and his group. This back-and-forth of excommunications marked the official separation of the two branches.

  • Theological Disputes:Filioque Controversy: The Western Church added “Filioque” (“and the Son”) to the Nicene Creed, which changed the belief about how the Holy Spirit comes from God. The Eastern Orthodox Church did not agree and preferred decisions to be made collectively by church leaders.Liturgical Differences: The two churches had different ways of celebrating services.
