- Serena Joy is the commanders wife. While she has more autonomy over what she does and her daily activities she still does not have as much as the men. Most of her time is spent in the garden tending to her flowers or in the sitting room doing her knitting. Because she is sterile she can not have her own children that is why she has Offred to in hopes conceive a child for her.

- Aunt Lydia
- Aunt Lydia was one of the Aunts that worked in the red centre to teach the girls what is expected of them in now that they are becoming handmaids. She is stern and can have quite the temper at times. Aunt Lydia believes in the regime and fully embodies the person that the Aunts should be. We most see he in the flash backs to the red centre but she also runs some of the salvagings.

- Offred, meaning of Fred, is the protagonist of the Handmaids tale. Having had all her freedoms taken from her when she arrived at the red centre, she learns how to be a good Handmaids with the purpose of being able to get pregnant and give birth to a healthy baby for the commander and his wife. Before becoming a handmaid she had a life with her husband and daughter where she could work and have the same amount of freedoms as the men did. In this scene Offred is going shopping as it is one of her duties as a handmaid. She is getting oranges as they are not always available.
