- Filipino man named captain Tiago host#160; a dinner party to welcome Juan Crisostomo Ibarra Y Magsalin back to the Philippines.
- One day Don Rafael came up on the goverment tax collector beating the boy in the street.
- When Don Rafael interfered, he accidentally pushed the man too hard causing the tax collector to hit his head on the rock.
- That injury lead to a man's death. Your father was thrown in jail and accused of subversion and heresy.
- Father Damaso heaped new accusation on him and everyone abandoned him. By the time he was finally proven innocent. Don Rafael had already died in prison.
- In talking to various guests at captain Tiago's dinner party, he discover#160; that his father, Don Rafael recently died, though he doesn't know how or why.
- During the dinner, Father Damaso#160; stand up and insult Ibarra about his education in Europe. In response, Ibarra swallow his pride and refrain from directly insult at the half drank friar.
- #160;On his way home, Ibarra walks with Señor#160; Guevara, a lieutenant of civil guard. The lieutenant explain that a few months after Ibarra left, father damaso accused Don Rafael of not going to confession. He tells Ibarra about what happend to Don Rafael.
