  • I feel better now, I don't need to take antibiotics anymore!
  • We're still alive!
  • Using antibiotics the wrong way or using too much of it can be fatal for many different reasons, and it can also cause evolution in bacteria.
  • Resistant bacteriaNon-resistant bacteria
  • Selective Pressure
  • One way that antibiotics are misused is that they are used for the wrong reason. After its mass production in 1941, people started to use penicillin for almost everything including viruses. But penicillin didn't help cure simple viruses like a cold.
  • Another way that antibiotics are misused is that it isn't taken long enough to kill all of the bacteria. Most of the time, when people start to feel better, they stop taking antibiotics. But sometimes, not all of the bacteria is gone. Antibiotics put selective pressure on the bacteria and kill most of it, but not all of it.
  • Selective pressure (antibiotics)
  • Selective pressure, the process of choosing the fittest to survive, causes the bacteria that aren't resistant to the antibiotics to die. But some bacteria are resistant to the antibiotics and survive. These are called the fittest bacteria because they can survive long enough to reproduce.
  • When bacteria reproduce, genetic variation causes the bacteria to be different from the old bacteria that wasn't resistant to the antibiotics. Since these surviving bacteria are resistant to the antibiotics, when they reproduce, genetic variations cause the new bacteria to be more resistant to the antibiotics and it is now harder to kill off this bacteria.
