  • 13 Maori Chiefs from the Bay of Islands sent a letter to King William IV. This was done as the French sent a ship to NZ, threatening the Maori. Hence they asked for protection against the French. The Chiefs were concerned about other matters such as the occurrence of inter-tribal conflict.
  • 1835
  • In this year, James Busby was declared as the first British resident in NZ. With his arrival he had no police force nor army to support him. Because of this he had to use diplomacy achieve any of his goals, he was described by many as a warship without guns.
  • 1836-1838
  • In Waitangi, a flag was selected by Norther Chiefs on March, 1834. James Busby wished the flag might encourage inter-tribal cooperation. This flag became known as the United Tribals' flag. It was recognised by the British king, became the national flag for NZ ships, and received a 21-gun salute.

  • A group of Northern Rangatira were brought together by James Busby due to their concerns about the lawlessness in Russel. Because of this, the Declaration of Independence was signed by 34 Northern Chiefs.

  • Between these years, the Declaration of Independence was passed through NZ, gaining many more signatures
  • This is the year where signatures came to a stop as it had grown to 52 signatures. Te Wherowhero, the chief of Waikato, also signed the Declaration of Independence. He soon became the first Maori king.
