Due to Buck's carefree nature, he finds himself in trouble as he is kidnapped and sent to be used as a sled dog.
Even though buck is in a place he doesn't recognize with people he doesn't recognize, he still finds out how to be caring and helpful. He does so by returning John Thornton's harmonica.
After getting picked to be on Francoise's mail service by Perrault, Buck slowly becomes accustomed to being a sled dog, and even helps the other dogs against the tyranny of the lead dog Spitz.
After Buck is attacked by Spitz and Buck wins and becomes the pack leader, Buck lead Francoise and Perrault to completing the mail run. However, all of the dogs get kicked off the sled team, and moved onto a new team led by an abusive man named Hal until Buck is saved by John.
John Thornton and Buck go on an adventure into the mountains and grow a bond between each other, however it starts to grow apart after Buck starts to let into his instincts and starts to become independent in the wild with a pack of wolves.
Hal comes back for revenge and gold, and John Thornton is shot, but Buck disarms and kills Hal, in John's last moments him and Buck spend the time with each other and Buck visits John's grave annually as the head of the wolf pack.
