On September 11, 2001, commercial airplanes flew into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Al-Qaeda was responsible for this attack. The passengers on the plane were taken hostage and entered the cockpits for a suicide mission, where almost 3,000 people died. 
In 1979, popular demonstrations overthrew the Shah of Iran, one of America's strongest supporters. When Shah was admitted intothe United States, the Iranian government let an angry mob seizethe staff of U.S. embassy staff were held hostages, where they weren't freed until 1981.
In 1962, American spy planes discovered that Cubans were secretly building bases for nuclear missiles, and this triggeredthe Cuban Missile Crisis.
