I always want the best for my baby. But I'm afraid that my breastfeeding techniques are not as effective as it should be. Hmm, I should seek for breastfeeding counseling
Hello! I am here for a breastfeeding counseling. I'm a new mom of a 2-week old baby, and I'm not really sure if my ways of breastfeeding her is correct. Can you help me?
Hi! I am nurse Zunni and this clinic offers breastfeeding counseling. Yes, I would be glad to assist you. Let's go inside the office so that our conversation will be kept confidential.
Okay ma'am, so I will now start my counseling about breastfeeding techniques. Feel free to ask any questions if you have any. While breastfeeding is a natural process, it is normal for it to feel different or awkward at first. It is always helpful to keep some basic principles in mind and be prepared to handle common problems and/or seek help if they arise.Position for comfort - Try different positions so long as your baby is comfortable.Helping your baby latch on - this is the key step in breastfeeding. This makes their mouth form a seal around your nipple, covering much of the areola near the baby's lower jaw. There are signs that your baby has a good latch on: you are completely comfortable in breastfeeding, baby's top and bottom lips are wide open, their upper lip is very close to the nipple, their cheeks are full, an their tongue comes out over the lip during latch on and stays below the areola after nursing.Adjusting the latch - if you feel pain or rubbing of your nipple while breastfeeding, this is probably because your nipple is getting compressed. This will make it harder for the baby to get ilk flow.Sucking and swallowing - when your baby is feeding well, you can usually hear them swallow (a small kuh sound).
Wow. That was quite informative. Can you tell me more about when to feed my baby?
Feed when your baby is hungry- a baby shows signs of hunger instead of a scheduled hunger. You should make sure that they feed at least 8 to 12 times in 24 hrs. Feeding cues involves: rooting or turning of the head, bobbing of head when you are holding them close to your chest, and opening and closing the mouth or smacking the lips.Maintain your milk supply - The amount of milk that you produce depends on how often and how completely your breasts are emptied. Your body adapts to meet your baby's needsObserve if your baby is getting enough milk. the signs include: they feed at least 8 times in 24 hrs, they seem satisfied and relaxed after fed, they have atleast one wet diaper per day , and swallowing during the feeds.
You're welcome, ma'am. You can always come back if you have any problems with regards to this.
Thank you, nurse Zunni! I learned a lot today, and I will make sure to apply these in breastfeeding my baby.
