  • Hello students! My name is Mrs. Sylvia Trent Adams. I was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on June 15, 1965.
  • This was not necessarily a sundown town, however was not as progressive with the times and accepting of African American citizens. This included practices such as segregated housing and facilities.

  • I was raised on a farm in Concord, Virginia. This was a small, rural area mixed with both Black and White residents. Here I not only learned the importance of hard work, but the racial and economic issues black people face daily.

  • At the age of 12, I decided to become a candy striper, which was my first real experience of seeing patients and nurses interact. Here, I witnessed many instances of mistreatment including food being slid across the room to a patient with HIV. This resonated deeply with me and peaked my interest in nursing and patient advocacy.

  • In 1983, at the age of 18 I enrolled at Hampton University for a degree in nursing and the ROTC program. After receiving my BSN, I then pursued higher education for both my MSN and DNP.
  • Diapositiva: 5
  • I began to work as a registered nurse in underserved communities before receiving my MSN and DNP. This allowed me to make a difference and build experience in health equity, rural health policies, and HIV/AIDS policies (inspired by my previous experiences seeing patient mistreatment)
  • Diapositiva: 6
  • I continued to progress and move to clinical settings by reducing and improving the stigma regarding HIV/AIDS policies globally. I worked on policy development, public health program management, and researching to add depth to the nursing profession.
  • Diapositiva: 7
  • Through my hard work and service to the community, I was ranked Rear Admiral and Chief Nurse Officer for the USPHS Commissioned Corps
  • Diapositiva: 8
  • I also was appointed to serve as Principal Deputy Surgeon General of the United States, which made me the first Black woman to serve in this position.
  • Diapositiva: 9
  • Lastly, in 2024 I was appointed as the 13th President of the University of Sciences in Philadelphia (which merged with Saint Joseph's University)
  • Diapositiva: 10
  • So as you can see, I have dedicated my life from a young age to helping the underserved and providing the best care to patients. I continue to serve patients and treat them with the utmost respect and integrity, while ensuring others in my field do too. Despite every obstacle in my way due to racial boundaries, I persevered and used those challenges to motivate me to push past those limits. Every step I've taken in my career has prepared not only me to advocate for equity in healthcare, but future nurses such as yourselves. I thank you for listening and wish you the best on your journey as future Black nurses.
