  • This volcanic eruption will start the process of Primary Succession. Primary Succession is ecological succession that occurs in an environment with no life.
  • After the volcanic eruption, the was only exposed rock and abiotic material left. After a while, a pioneer species, lichens, started growing on the rocks.
  • As soil starts collecting in the area, grasses start growing in the barren habitat. Soon primary consumers and secondary consumers arrive into the ecosystem.
  • Primary succession occurs when new land is formed or bare rock is exposed. Oftentimes, this happens when a natural disasterdestroys a barren habitat. In this example, the volcano erupting will cause the lava to spread and form new land.
  • Following the grass and small animals, larger consumers entered the environment. Small trees, tall trees, and bushes all sprouted in the ecosystem as well.
  • Lichens are a pioneer species in the process of primary succession. A pioneer species is an organism that first colonizes an area after a natural disaster. Lichens tightly attach themselves to rocks and contract themselves causing pieces of the rocks to detach. Essentially, Lichens through the process of weathering the rocks to turn them into the soil.
  • The Temperate deciduous forest has caughton fire! This wildfirewill mark the start ofsecondary succession.
  • Grass is typically the next organism that starts growing after lichens in an environment. The grass attracts primary consumers that eat the grass (rabbits, rodents, etc.). The arrival of the primary consumers then brings predators who eat them into the ecosystem.
  • Wow! The grass grew so quickly. So many new organisms have already started entering the ecosystem.
  • With the advancement and addition of all the new biotic factors in the environment, the ecosystem's biodiversity has increased. Due to this, the Temperate deciduous forest's sustainability has also increased.
  • The wildfire is a natural disaster that occurred in this biome. The Temperate deciduous forest has been wiped out of most of its biotic material. The process of secondary succession could take as few as 50 years to bring the ecosystem back to homeostasis. This change is much faster than primary succession, as there is still soil in the habitat.
  • Even after the wildfire, the soil remained where it was. This meant there was no need for lichens to weather rocks to make soil. The pioneer species for secondary succession is grass.
