- So, The system of estates in french society was divided into three- 1st estate consists of clergy, 2nd estate consist Nobility. The members of these two estates enjoyed certain privileges by birth..
- now comes the third estate that consists of, first- big businessmen, merchants, lawyers, etc. second- peasants and artisans...
- ... third- small peasants, landless labours, servants. Peasants made up about 90% of the population. However, only small no. of them owned the land they cultivated. About 60% of the land was owned by the nobles, the Church and other richer members of third estate.
- Peasants were obliged to render services to the lord-to work in his house and fields- to serve in the army or to participate in buidling roads.
- The most important of these was exemption from paying taxes to state. these included feudal dues, which they extracted from the peasants.
