  • In October of 1789, thousands of Parisian women rioted and protested over the rising price of bread which they marched with knives, axes, etc. on Versailles. They demand that the National Assembly take action to provide bread and Louis eventually agreed which signaled the change of power and radical reforms about to overtake France. 
  • Execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette
  • Three weeks after the Old Regime died, the National Assembly adopted a statement of revolutionary ideals. It reflected the influence of the Declaration of Independence and stated that "men are born and remain free and equal in rights." The rights included, "liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression. " They used the slogan, "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity"
  • Rise of Napoleon
  • In 1793, radicals took control of the Revolutionary government which led it to a dark and violent period during the French Revolution. It was led by Maximilien Robespierre and the Jacobins arrested and executed anyone who they suspected might not be loyal to the revolution.
  • Fall of Napoleon
  • The Jacobins tried Louis XVI for treason and Marie Antoinette for other crimes against the state and they were put to the guillotine in 1793. 
  • In 1799, he held the title of first consul which assumed powers of a dictator. In 1801, he set up an efficient method of tax collection and established a national banking system. Also, set up lycees to end corruption in government. Established a new relationship with the church and in 1804 he introduced Napoleonic code for a uniform set of laws. Became emperor in 1804. Won the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805 which allowed Napoleon to build the largest European empire since that of the Romans.
  • November 1806, he ordered a blockade to prevent trade and communication between Great Britain and other European nations which later weakened the economics of France. Tried to invade Portugal and began the Peniinsular War which was a loss of 300000 solders and weekend the French empire. June 1812, invaded Russia with his Grand Army, but the soldiers were in search of food because of the scorched-earth policy. Sep. 14, 1812 he entered Moscow but stayed too long and all but 10000 soldiers died of preventable causes. He decided to raise another army and fought the battle of Leipzig, but lost and Napoleons empire fell apart. Then, he escaped Elba and fought in the battle of Waterloo where they were defeated and it ended Napoleons power.
