Testo Storyboard

  • You have to stop this Percy!
  • Stella get news from Percy that a black family is moving in to the neighborhood, and she is not happy. "'You must stop them, Percy,' she said. 'If you don't, there'll be more then what?'" (Bennett 146). Stella doesn't want to experience any change from the life she has grown accustomed to. In her efforts to do so she begs Percy to do something to stop it. Throughout all of this Stella is thinking of how to her life from changing.
  • I'm trying to.
  • Desiree? No, I can't be here right now.
  • My mom, your twin, has been looking for you.
  • Stella runs into Jude at Kennedy's play and gets the news that she and Desiree were looking for her. "'She should've forgotten all about me.' 'But she didn't! You can call her. We can call her right now. She would be so glad--' I've got to go,' Stella said. 'But--,' 'It's too much,' she said. 'I can't go back through that door. It's another life, you understand?" (Bennett 249). Stella doesn't want to deal with the "problems" of her past or accept it because she's been living this lie for so long. Since she's in a denial state when Jude tells her this she doesn't want to hear or accept it.
  • Stella had been looking through her blinds and seen Kennedy playing with Cindy and she wasn't happy about it. "Before she knew it, she'd stormed across the street and grabbed her daughter's arm, both gaping as she dragged Kennedy back into the house" (Bennett 165). Stella didn't want it to be known that she had any involvement with the Walkers. She limited as much contact between them as possible, but when Stella saw this she got scared and just reacted.
  • We're going home Kennedy.
  • What does the character think about? 146
  • Stella has to rush across the street after seeing the girls crying. When she gets over there Loretta has an interesting explanation for her. "'You know what she said to Cindy? Well, the girls were playing some game and Kennedy was losing so she said, 'I don't want to play with a n-----'" (Bennett 198-199). Stella talking about Cindy after she dragged her away impacted how Kennedy viewed Cindy. As a result it ruined their friendship, and it was all because Stella forgot that kids will mimic their parents.
  • I'm so sorry.
  • Keep her away from my daughter!
  • What is something the character cannot do? 249
  • Kennedy confronts her mom on something she remembered as a child because she wants to know more about her mom, but Stella isn't very helpful in the situation. "'You must have remembered wrong. You were still a baby.' Her mother stepped forward, the cake behind her smoothed on the top and edges. ' Come here, honey. Want to lick the spoon?' This was the first time Kennedy realized that her mother was a liar" (Bennett 270). Stella disregards  what Kennedy is asking in order to keep her life, that she lied to get, a safe. Funny enough it looks like this is Stella's new truth.
  • I never said that to you.
  • You told me you're from Mallard.
  • What actions do they take? 165
  • Kennedy asks Stella what her mom was like and she responds with the lie that she is dead. "Once, during bedtime, she asked Stella what her mother was like and Stella nearly dropped the storybook. 'She's not here anymore,' she finally said" (Bennett 152). Stella lies to her daughter here and more times throughout her life in order to protect her new life that she built as a white woman.
  • What is grandma like?
  • She is dead, unfortunately.
  • What effect do they have on others? 199
  • What kind of person are they? 270
  • What do they do well? 152
