  • Hey Charlie, how are you?
  • Hey Cameron, I'm fine but why do you look so sad?
  • It's just sad that you don't seem to know the side effects of smoking that cigarette on the lungs since I see you with one everyday.
  • Indeed they are. The benzene can cause acute lymphocytic and myeloid leukemia. Ammonia can cause bronchiolar and alveolar edema and airway destruction resulting in respiratory failure. The formaldehyde causes bronchospasm and airway irritation. Hydrogen cyanide causes respiratory tract irritation and hypernea. Nicotine can cause emphysema and chronic obtrusive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • What do you mean? I thought there were no side effects of smoking cigars other than keeping the brain tranquil.
  • Oh how wrong you are!! Smoking can cause lung disease by damaging your airways and the small air sacs (alveoli) found in your lungs. It can also cause breathing problems and chronic respiration. When you smoke, it causes chronic cough, shortness of breath and wheezing.
  • OHH!! But why does all those things happen??!!
  • Because, Charlie, there are different substances that make up a cigarette. Like benzene, ammonia, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, nicotine, cadmium and many more harmful substances.
  • WOW!! Those do sound harmful!
  • Really!! And what does the cadmium do?
  • A chronic exposure to respirable cadmium may also lead to emphysema. But id you want to know more about what smoking does to your lungs, you can visit cdc.gov or lung.org. website. I have to go now though.
  • Thank you so much, Cameron for educating me. I promise that I will try to stop smoking but I will be sure to visit those websites that you recommended. I will see you later.
