Hello, My name is Cezar and and this is my response to Gina's Story!
Gina's Story
The first thing that startled me, and what I suspect many others is that the doctors had such a matter-of-fact attitude towards how much of a "burden" Gina would've been, saying things like "In this type of situation, you hope for the worst."
One thing that I commend about Professor Marcella is her tenacity to ensure Gina received quality and effective care and as many age-appropriate experiences as possible. One pattern I've seen in my education and sociology classes is that genuine support systems are critical to mental and physical health and Professor Marcella has gathered such a support system to support her and Gina.
I want to focus on those adjectives: quality, effective, and genuine. Slide 95 of the powerpoint shows a teacher showing Gina how to sort by physically moving her hands. The teacher is visibly annoyed and rushing the process while Gina is noticeably uncomfortable. It's quite distressing to watch. This teacher is not embodying any of those adjectives, she's treating Gina like an inconvenience that she has to get out the way. Thus, it's not enough to include Gina to say she's been included, rather she should be included in a way that she's not being treated like a burden.
There's nothing wrong with her. So what if she can't walk or talk?
The main idea that I got from this presentation is that there is power in attitude and determination. There were those with negative attitudes like the doctors who "hoped for the worst" or teachers who rushed their instruction. Despite that negativity, Gina's family and support system helped her immensely because of their genuine love and compassion. They treat her with the same level of respect as they would anyone else, and not as a burden like those with negative attitudes.
The next storyboard will share how I plan to engage parents as a social studies teacher!
