- "Vaporization is when a person is secretly murdered and erased from society, the present, the universe, and existence."Vaporization is the threat used against rebellious individuals to not only control them, but as a safety for the party's history. Any individual, or even history of that individual unaccounted for could destroy the party entirely. It magnifies the dangers within this plot, as retaliation has this severe punishment (something the characters must keep in mind). Example: If Winston is not careful to keep his beliefs to himself, he may get vaporized.

- "Doublethink is a process of indoctrination whereby the subject is expected to simultaneously accept two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct, often in contravention to one's own memories or sense of reality."Doublethink is a debilitating expectation that Big Brother expects all members of society to follow. It is the destruction of logic, the loss of the ability to form one's own thoughts. The individuals who fall into this trap may never leave, as it can be viewed as a submission of will. It is the bending of your own thought to the will of the Party, believing something one minute, something else the other, or even contradictory thoughts simultaneously. Example: The Party member believed the party raised the chocolate rations, despite their reduction in actuality.
- "They are television and security camera-like devices used by the ruling Party in Oceania to keep its subjects under constant surveillance, thus eliminating the chance of secret conspiracies against Oceania."The telescreens are the main surveyors of members of Oceana. Since they are present in the most private environment (the home) they are able to catch even the most minute hints of conspiracy. This can effect the thought process of party members drastically, as they cannot so much as have an abnormal heartbeat without the telescreen, with its enormous sensitivity, notice.Example: Winston wrote in the book out of reach of the telescreen, for fear of getting caught and vaporized.
