Up In Smoke - Vladek Reveals He Has Burned Anja's Journals

As an alternate ending, I chose to create a story of reconciliation when Vladek reveals that he has burned Anja's journals. Instead of arguing with each other, Vladek and Artie are able to become vulnerable with each other about the guilt they are carrying surrounding Anja's suicide. As a result, they are able to begin the healing process, and repair their father son relationship.

- After Anja died my heart was broke. Her journals had too many painful memories. On my very worst day I burned them. I wish I had them now to show you. I wish I could choose to save them.
- You erased the only way I had to understand my mother better! I feel like she killed herself because I was a bad son. I have carried that guilt around my whole life!
- Argh! Let me sit I feel not so good. Artie after Anja died I focused so much on all the bad things what happened. I was not a good father. I feel guilty too about why Anja died. You were not a bad son. Anja loved you very much. I love you too. I hope my story about all what we went through helps you understand.
- I'm sorry Pop. Now that you have told me about how much you suffered I understand you better. I just wanted to understand her too. I can see why revisiting all that happened was hard for you.
- I feel better now. Thank you Artie for understanding. Come inside for a little coffee. I will tell you all the stories of Anja so you can know her better.
- I would like that Pop. Thank you for letting me tell your story. It is important that the Holocaust is not forgotten. It is important we honour the memories of both the living and the dead. Thank you for helping me to understand.
