Communication

Testo Storyboard

  • Students who have autism have been introduced to apps and iPads which helped them with their communication and socialization skills. It may not work for every student, but it is important to introduce these methods and work towards finding different means of communication.
  • Communication is the essence of being human. Students who are nonverbal and face challenges due to their disability use AAC devices or picture symbols to help communicate with their family, their teachers, and their peers. By using an AAC device, it allows the student to express their wants and needs as well as participate in classroom activities alongside their peers. It can also help in daily living activities which is beneficial to both the student and the parent(s) of the child.
  • One thing I really enjoyed seeing in these videos were how supportive the parent(s) were
  • How Maya's mother advocated for her daughter's needs is how I hope every parent supports their child. It was inspiring to see that her mother pushed for change even though she was told her daughter was not ready. I also liked how she recognized picture books are helpful, but students should not be limited to just symbols in a communication book. I loved how happy Maya looked in the video and how she was excited when using her device.
  • I also really enjoyed the Creative Growth website. I think it's great that this non-profit organization gave people an opportunity to express themselves in a different way
  • Art is always considered to be a form of communication or way of expressing oneself. I think it is great that this allows people with disabilities to do that in a way that is unique to them.
