  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Scared people can destroy themselves.
  • One major theme of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is that scared people can destroy themselves. One example that supports this theme is when Charlie shoots Pete Van Horn on page #82. This shows that Charlie, out of fright, destroyed his friend for no reason. Page 83-84 show another reason that justifies this theme is when the crowd blames, harasses, and attacks Charlie for killing Van Horn. The crowd now fears Charlie because he killed Pete and they throw the blame on him now. Charlie, out of even more fear from being attacked and blamed, says that Tommy is the monster at the end of page 84. This leads to even more chaos because now everyone is blaming each other and violence ensues. Finally, on page 86 (at the end of the story), the two aliens that cut off power to maple street discuss what has happened and why. They tell each other how humans destroy themselves when they are frightened; they attack, kill, and destroy others. The aliens also seem to have done this before, so this street is no exception. In conclusion, a major theme of this story is that scared people can destroy themselves because of the way that the characters attack and kill each other out of fright.
