One of the main themes in "Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is Mankind is its own worst enemy. First, this is because on page 81 the scene shows Mrs. Goodman, Charlie, And Steve telling one another how there not above suspicion. This supports the theme because the people are all suspecting and distrusting one another even though there is no monster and its all in their head. Next, on page 83 the scene shows when Charlie shot Pete thinking it was the monster. This supports the theme because after everyone believing there was a monster and Charlie shooting Pete everyone thought Charlie was the monster but then he started blaming others and chaos happened from there. Finally, on page 86 it shows the scene when the aliens are talking about there reactions. This supports the theme because the alien directly says how if you turn off their machines and put them in darkness chaos will unravel itself and mankind is it's own worst enemy.
