- In 1333 the province of Hopei, china experienced a catastrophic epidemic which killed 2 thirds of its population. It killed 5 million chinese people.
- China, being one of the worlds biggest trading nations , spread the epidemic to Europe, The black death arrived in Messina , Sicily.
- By the time people had realised the ship had brought a sickness, It was way too late. The plague had already spread to the city,countryside and other cities!
- At around the same time, The tartars attacked Christian traders. Plague victims were piled in the city, Spreading the disease further.
- The black death reached the busy port city of Bristol, At the time it arrived in Bristol, London had a population of 70,000. London, which had poor living conditions and hygiene led to the spread of it throughout England. But why London??
- Bring out your dead!
- For two years this epidemic killed 30-40 percent of England's population, Wiping out entire towns and villages! But London was the worst affected. 18 months after the plague had reached London, It had killed 400,000 with such a big/rising death toll, The Smithfield cemetery was opened was quickly opened. In addition to this a second cemetery was opened at spittle croft. The same year Edward III ordered the cleaning of the streets to further avoid contamination, However the council responded that all street cleaners had died. Victims of the plague, especially the poor were buried in mass graves. But why was London so badly affected? London was filthy, with people disposing their waste onto the streets, There were narrow streets, Open sewage systems, Crowded dense housing(with multiple families inside) That had poor ventilation, facilities , sewage systems and hygiene. These all facilitated the spread of the plague in London and to the rest of Britain.
