We've placed a tax on every printed material, there has to be a stamp on the items to prove that the tax was paid.
The Stamp act put a tax on printed items which needed to include a stamp that proved that the tax was paid. The colonists got mad because they didn't get to decide the law. And they boycotted British goods.

In 1767, the British were going bankrupt, so everying imported from Britain had taxes. Even small and simple items like lead had taxes. The colonists boycotted British goods in protest.
