  • African struggles for independence after WWII Ghana was one of the first colonies in Africa to declareindependence from Great Britain. It was a role model for the rest of the other colonies. The way it gained independence, was peaceful, but it had consequences. It experienced, European nations unwilling to give up their colonies, political instability, and poverty/disease.
  • Ghana earned independence in 1957 with the help of a nationalist leader, Kwame Nkrumah. He had an education because he went to college so he knew that using campaigns would be the best way to peacefully reach independence. At first, they struggled to reach independence because Ghana was rich in resources and it made a good economy. So British didn't want to give up. But Nkrumah was able to convince the British government and independence. Nkrumah soon began Ghana as a, "'one-party state with himself as 'president for life,'"(Pearson & Holdren, 830). He didn't give much liberty to the people, this brought a lot of political instability, people overthrew his government, and switch from a military rule, or a democratic one. Until this day, Ghana, and many other colonies of Africa, suffer from poverty and disease. "24.2% of the population living under the poverty line," (Ghana Statistical Service, 2014). So, they did earn independence but suffered from non-experienced leaders.
  • We want independence
  • I, Kwame Nkrumah, will help you be free!
  • We want Independence!
  • To have prevented instability, and violence the government needs to have clear communication with the citizens. It would have been better if they all collaborated on the problems they were facing. For example, they could have asked for everybody's vote on the way the country would have been ruled. Make good benefits for not only the government but for the people, so it would be fair, to work as a team. Lastly, ask other governments for help, and advice if a supposed leader isn't experienced enough to control a country.
  • We want justice!
