- Buddha was born as a prince named Siddhartha Gautama. His father ruled a kingdom in what is now Nepal. According to legend, a fortune teller predicted two futures for the young prince. He could become a mighty king or a religious leader. His father wanted him to become a king instead of a religious leader.
- Can I have food?
- Sorry I don´t have anything.
- Siddhartha was raised in wealth and luxury. As he grew up his father protected him from everything unpleasant. As a young man, he married. He and his wife had a son and it seemed that the prince had everything he could ever want.
- OMMMMM OMMMMM
- When he was 29, he rode out of the palace without any guards. During the ride he saw four passing sights. First, he saw an old man leaning on a stick. Second, he saw a man shrunken by disease. Third, he saw a man who died. Lastly, he saw a wandering holy man.
- I am now Buddha.
- Siddhartha began his search by studying with Hindu gurus. His next step was to join a band of ascetics. For Siddhartha, living as an ascetic meant denying himself of all physical comforts. After five years of self-denial, his body was very weak. He fainted. When he awoke it was clear to him that this was not the path to truth. As a result, the ascetics abandoned him.
- As his strength returned, he renewed his search. He went to a fig tree and meditated under it for 49 days, legend say that he was visited by Mara, who tried to tempt him to give up his search, when that failed she attacked him with rains and showers of rocks. He went deeper into meditation and saw his past life. He entered a new life free of desire and suffering. He had achieved enlightenment and became the Buddha.
