Hey ya'll! We sure would love it to become part of your republic, what do you say? Texas is a great place, WE HAVE SLAVES AND EVERYTHING!
Thanks for the offer, but we don't want another slave state in America, it would completely disrupt political balance.
THE LONE STAR REPUBLIC
After Texas gained its independence from Mexico in April of 1836, they realized that self-governance came with its own challenges, and deemed it necessary to join a bigger nation: The USA! However, American political leaders, such as President Polk, were worried about adding another slave state to the US, delaying the Texas Annexation.

1845
Wonderful! Hmmm... I shall discuss with Congress about the Texas Annexation...
The Oregon Trade sprouted from the dilemma of which country, America or Great Britain, should own the territory that is now known as Oregon. Many scholars speculate that Britain chose to give up the territory to maintain peace with the US, and in doing so, political leaders felt assured that adding Oregon (a free state) could balance the affects of annexing Texas (a slave state).
