There are many important motifs in the opening scene although the one I have deemed most important is the motif of the colours. The scene pictured here is the one where Nick is first visiting Daisy. Looking at the "red and white" colonial house (Fitzgerald, 9), we can infer that Tom is powerful, red is very commonly used as a colour to represent dominance, something Tom is all about. The second one I noticed was Daisy, from her name. Daisy is a white flower, and the colour white represents purity and innocence, having this colour in the house also shows the bond between Daisy and Tom, their house being the both of them combined.

The different colours in this scene are incredibly important. Fitzgerald using these colours provokes the reader to make assumptions about the characters, which are all represented through the book. People also make assumptions based on Daisy's name. When I first read through this book, I noticed her name and how it was supposed to represent her. Overall, these colours in this scene show people the first glimpse of the main characters, allowing the readers to infer whatever they like about the 2 characters Tom and Daisy.
