  • Hello. My name is Ms. Davis, and I am the principal. How can I help you?
  • Diapositiva: 3
  • That is not a problem. We want all our students to succeed, so we can evaluate your daughter and develop a specialized plan for her.
  • My family is new to the area, and we are looking for a school that is a good fit for our daughter. She may need some extra help.
  • Diapositiva: 4
  • Absolutely not! The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guarantees you and your child the right to special education services, including the evaluation, through the Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) law (Shepley, 2025).
  • Do I have to pay for that?
  • Diapositiva: 5
  • No. The IDEA allows us to create an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for students so they can remain in the general education setting (Monahan et al., 2023). Students with extenuating circumstances may be placed in a Most Restrictive Environment (MRE), but those situations are rare.
  • If she qualifies for services, does that mean she would be placed in a room by herself?
  • Diapositiva: 6
  • Of course! The IEP is a specialized education plan that establishes goals, services, and accommodations for students with disabilities to support placement in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) alongside their peers (Monahan et al., 2023).
  • Can you tell me more about the IEP?
  • Diapositiva: 7
  • Yes, ma’am! You have the right to participate in all decisions regarding your daughter, including reviewing her records and challenging the school’s decisions if you disagree (Shepley, 2025).
  • Do I have any say as her parent?
  • Diapositiva: 8
  • Absolutely! The IDEA also supports non-academic success, ensuring she has the same opportunities for extracurriculars and other non-academic activities.
  • What about sports? She loves basketball. Will she still be able to play if she has an IEP?
  • Diapositiva: 9
  • That is our goal. Inclusive classrooms build compassion, respect, and empathy. We pride ourselves on promoting virtues that protect all human dignity.
  • This all sounds wonderful! My daughter will be able to attend school with her friends in the same classroom, play sports, and further her education, all while the teachers meet her individual needs.
  • Diapositiva: 10
  • Sometimes, the plans are not implemented effectively, but that depends on the faculty. We have an excellent faculty that will work with you and your daughter to ensure the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) is properly implemented, which will allow all children to benefit from peer modeling (Hardy et al., 2025).
  • Is there anything this law can’t do?
  • Diapositiva: 11
  • If you must go to another school, make sure they are using a variety of assessment tools to ensure a fully comprehensive evaluation. Ask if they promote parent involvement and proactive communication between parents and educators (Hardy et al., 2025). Also, make sure that inclusion and the Least Restrictive Environment are a priority.
  • What happens if we have to leave this school? Do you have any advice for me?
  • Diapositiva: 12
  • We provide ongoing training in special education, work to establish an inclusive culture with open communication, and teach students to advocate for themselves. They learn about their rights and the process for creating their instructional plan.
  • How do you make sure those things are done at your school?
  • Diapositiva: 13
  • It certainly sounds like you have a wonderful school that cares for all of its students. We have found our home.
  • I am glad to hear that. Welcome home!
