  • In the First Stanza, She sees a carriage with a man in it. The carriage and the man represents death and how she didn't stop for death but it stopped for her. The man in the carriage is going to take her on her ride to the afterlife.
  • In the Second Stanza, the man and her are riding the carriage, and they are taking the ride very slowly. She also mentions on her journey she put her labor and leisure away, which means she has came to terms with her mortality. The slow journey represents her slow journey to the afterlife.
  • In the Third Stanza, her and the man in the carriage are riding past a school with children playing outside. This is part of the journey to the afterlife when they go through childhood. They also mention " grazing grain which represents her to look back on her prime life.
  • In the Forth Stanza, they are riding down and the sun has set but she realizes the fact that she isn't comfortable anymore and the fact that she is getting cold and starts to shiver. Which represents that she is not as comfortable with death as she was before.
  • In the Fifth Stanza, they pause there journey in front a house that at first seemed a swelling of ground with the roof scarcely visible and the cornice in the ground. Which represents the fact that she was disappointed that death wasn't as great as she thought it was going to be.
  • In the Sixth Stanza, it mentions " centuries yet shorter than a day ", where she came to the realization that life will go on without her. It also mentioned that it was "first surmised" , where she realized that death took her for granted making himself seem all kind and a gentleman, but he really wasn't and left her alone in the cold and dark grave.
