  • In October 1789 Women rioted over rising the cost of bread in Versailles. They broke into the Palace and forced Louis the XVI and Marie Antoinette to come back to Paris. This caused change in power and radical reforms to overthrow France.
  • Execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette
  • The Old Regime was dead and the National Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Right of Man and Citizen. The document stated that all men are born and remain free and equal in rights. It gave citizens the right to Liberty, Equality, Fraternity and freedom of justice, speech, and religion. Later on Olympe de Gouges tried to publish a Declaration of Woman but was rejected and was declared an enemy.
  • Rise of Napoleon
  • In 1793 a dark and violent time overtook France and his name was Maximilien Robespierre. Radicals killed anyone who they thought were not devoted to the revolution. Robespierre led the committee of Public along with a group called Jacobins who wanted to preserve the revolution. About 40,000 people were killed and 200,00 were arrested during this time period. Eventually his enemies made a plan to overthrow him and the Reign of Terror was history.
  • Fall of Napoleon
  • The National Convention, that was now led by radical Jacobins, tried Louis XVI for treason. He was found guilty and was voted to be put to death by Guillotine. Marie Antoinette was charged with charges against the state and was sentenced to death by the Guillotine as well.
  • In 1795 Napoleon defended the National convention from royalists and the following year he was appointed to lead the French Army. In 1799 he had lost power and became the first consul leader. Napoleon set up schools called lycees and signed an agreement with the Church establishing a new relationship. In 1804 he created the Napoleon code to give France an organized law system. That same year he appointed himself the emperor of France.
  • Napoleon lost the battle of Trafalgar which was the first event that set his downfall in motion. Napoleon was exiled from france and the Congress of Vienna wanted to re-establish peace. The great powers made decisions in secret for a year. The Congress of Vienna wanted to prevent future attacks on France, balance powers, and to restore royal families to their thrones.
