- Esperanza was a girl living in mexico. Her family was very wealthy as they owned a vineyard that grew grapes for wine. They had many servants and workers.
- one day their father was killed by bandit. He left them the house and money from the grapes but he could not leave the land itself to a women. He left the land to their uncle. He decided he wanted to marry romana.
- Esperanza's mom said NO!. When she refued he burned their hose and crops down. She decided they would escape to the the USA with their trusty servants,Hortensia,Alfonso,and their son,Melgu
