There was once a stable population of earth dragons. The earth dragon diet consisted of triple-headed hounds. The hounds were extremely fast so the only way the dragons could catch them is by blending into their habitat and sneeking up on them. Their comoflauge was the only way they could hunt their only food source. There was also a red variation of earth dragons known as fire dragons. The fire dragons would usually die soon after they got old enough to leave their mother because they couldn't catch any food because they stood out and couldn't blend in and sneek up on prey.

The genes from the parents determine what color the babies will be. The earth dragon variation was the dominant gene. The only ways a fire dragon could be born is if the parents were two fire dragons, if two earth dragons that carried the gene for the fire dragon variation had a baby and the baby got both recessive genes, or if a earth and fire dragon had a baby and it got both recessive genes.

Many years later...
After many generation and a great extent of years almost all of the dragons will have the fire dragon variation. This is because the fire phenotype in now the more successful one.
